And while the traffic will flow, what will remain of the iconic Belize City Swing Bridge? It is a defining feature of the city and its history - but 100 years plus of exposure to salt air, weather, and constant use has taken its toll.

The MIDH Minister acknowledged the bridge's immense historical value and said that he hopes plans can be explored to physically archive key components of the structure so it can be preserved and displayed for future generations.

Julius Espat, Minister of Infrastructure Development & Housing
"Like the Haulover we had designed it so that we could move it and right now we're putting the Haulover bridge in the Santa Familia crossing into San Ignacio. This one won't be able, it's too much, it's too old. I think the city council and NICH should consider taking portions of it and putting it in the museum, I think that would be something but reusable aspects of it will not happen."
