Drew Binsky, an American travel influencer with 9 million Facebook followers known for traveling to 197 different countries, today posted a reel on Facebook naming the top 9 dirtiest cities in the Caribbean. And he ranked Belize City second!
Here's how he put it:
Now you might call it clickbait, but the Facebook reel already has a million views, so today we asked Mayor Bernard Wagner for a response to Binsky's list.
He strenuously disagreed and in a lengthy WhatsApp message said, quote, "No credible study or scientific method has been provided to support that ranking.... the Belize City Council has a robust garbage collection programme and cleanup... When hotspots or informal dumpsites are identified we tackle them immediately."
We note that the video primarily exposed the conditions of Belize City's canals, describing them as "giant illegal trash cans overloaded with trash." The video also ranks Georgetown, Guyana as the #1 dirtiest city.
