Earlier you saw Dr. Arlie Petters' PSE mathematics textbook at work in the classroom. But that's just one of the initiatives that his institute is leading in mathematics, science, and language. This morning at the Muslim Community School, Dr. Petters and the BDF's Commander Brigadier General Lloyd Gillett announced plans to hold a computer assembly course at Price Barracks this summer. They explained how it will work.

Brig. Gen. Lloyd Gillett, BDF
"Dr. Petters is bringing somebody to Belize who will teach students. We are selecting 50 or so students to go through a one week course assembling computers. Dr. Petters will tell you more about the program itself."

Dr. Arlie Petters,
"This is in fact a real pleasure for me personally because technology as we know is one of the key areas of growth for a young nation, especially one like ours and being able to join with a significant institution like the Belize Defense Force, I believe sends the right signal to our young people. We will have students from about ages 12 to 19 and they are going to divided into small groups, say groups of about 4 or 5, and the older students in that group will mentor the younger ones. They will learn about the inside of a computer, a bit about the software, and then they are going to be assembling them from scratch."

Interested students can apply through their schools or online at http://www.bdf.bz. General Gillett and Dr. Petters also confirmed that this year there will be a 3 week math and science intensive program for BDF cadets interested in improving test scores for admission to U.S. military academies.
