In June when Telemedia adopted Bethel Primary School on Freetown Road, they promised to change the look of the school. They weren’t kidding. 4 months and more than $50,000 later we now know what they meant. The new Bethel Primary School was unveiled today and its painted in the colors of Telemedia, bright purple and white, like a little corporate colony of the telecom mothership. We spoke to Bethel’s principal Edward Logan and Telemedia’s public relations executive Lynette Canto.

“We really needed a boost in our program in terms of the furniture and so on and we slowly got those in place through various donors and we’ve gone through a phase where they were trying times for the school and when it came to the adoption, it was an unexpected gesture by BTL and we’re fortunate that they chose to work with us.”

“Bethel Primary School was chosen first of all because they were in need but more importantly because we felt that they had the determination and the drive that they wanted to grow and develop as a school and we felt that we would be able to assist in this process.”

“As a school we wanted to ensure that the children who come here get the best that they can get and with the infrastructural changes as well as the other things that improved, things like computers and internet service and so on, we can definitely see that our children will get more out of our programs starting from here.”

“What we actually did was to do physical refurbishment to the school building. That involved making repairs where needed, painting, just basic things that we would need to uplift the appearance of the school. We also built upon the computer they already had. At the point when we came in none of the computers were really working. So what we did was donate 6 new computers to them with full internet access.”
Telemedia has adopted the school for 3 years and plans to spend a total of $150,000 on the school. In addition to financial assistance, Telemedia employees have committed to mentor students.
