Mike Hernandez - PR Director, Social Investment Fund

"Under the Belize Municipal Development Project (BMDP) - this is a $13 million dollar project which is being implemented by SIF and financed by the government through a loan from the World Bank. There are several components of the BMDP, one of them has to do with capacity building and the training for today is actually to deal with issues that affect public relations personnel that has been attached to the various town and City Councils. So in reality then this training is about assisting them to become more effective and more efficient at their work but on the side to that is that this training is part of a communication strategy that is being developed under the BMDP. That strategy aims among other things - to look at short, medium and long term avenues on how to create a two way communication between the stakeholders and the BMDP. It is very important for the people to tell us how they feel about the various projects being implemented and likewise it is very important for us to tell them about the various projects."

The training continues until the end of the week. SIF reports that the infrastructure developments represent an investment of 7.8 million dollars under phase 1.

They are about to start phase 2 of the municipal development project, which will bring another 30 million dollars in investment.
