And, in Belmopan - the theme was similar with 76 Belize City kids participating in a summer camp about agriculture.

It's being held at the Belize Agriculture and Trade Show Grounds - and the annual event sees kids from urban environments being put into a rural context where they learn all kinds of stuff that the concrete jungle could never teach them.

This year - led by Belmopan police it's gotten bigger than ever. We stopped by and spoke with one of the lead police officers coordinating the camp which is seeing its second group in week two. Here's what she told us:

Sgt. Marleni Montejo - Assisting ED Community Policing

"Today, we have 76 children with us, 9 police officers. This is a yearly program, I think, started with Mr. Gillett in Belize City. So, this year, it's here in Belmopan. The children came out, starting yesterday. They learned different things about agriculture. Today, they received a lecture on planting the seedlings, then they went on to transplanting them, and now they are learning how to mix manure, the local manure we have at home with the chicken stool and all those things. So, they're being taught about it today. This afternoon, we go into agro-processing, teaching the children that from fruits, we can make jams, jellies, juice and all those things."

"So, who are the kids? Where are they from, who are participating?"

Sgt. Marleni Montejo
"Well, we get kids from Belize City, all the different areas from Belize City. We don't choose the children. We go out. We recruit them. The parents are willing to send them of course, and we get our consent from them, and they join the program with us."

Reporter
"As far as you've seen since it's been running this year, how has the reception been from the children."

Sgt. Marleni Montejo
"Well, they're here. They make sure they are there waiting for the bus from 7. Sometimes from 6:30, they are there already waiting for us. Some of them are enthusiastic about it. You know, instead of just staying home for summer, they have something to look forward to."

Joseph Castillo - Participant
"Sir, I learned a lot of things. I learned how to be responsible, caring, and how to be somebody, and stop give trouble."

"We learned how to do plants today, So, I know how to do it now."

This summer camp ends on Sunday.
