And while the adults are breathing a sigh of relief at a later curfew and what seems like a few privileges for the vaccinated, children are still taking the brunt of the pandemic, that's because it's put their education at risk.
It's a hard reality that the Ministry of Education was rushing to fix, designating today Monday, October 4th as the day when the schools that were ready would have been allowed to open.
But I seems there're weren't many openings.
59 schools were approved on Friday but when we did a drive around today, from ACC, to SJC, and from Hummingbird Elementary to Belize High School, we saw closed doors.
This is despite the fact that at least two of those schools had an excellent teacher and student vaccination rates. Notably, Belize High School has been in the news for managing to vaccinate 100% of its faculty and 93% of its student population.
So, what happened? Well, the consensus we got while visiting schools today was that parents remain concerned.
Concerned about rising positivity rates, the current COVID surge, the Delta variant, and in at least one case the necessity of public transportation that many children have no other option but to use in order to get to school.
And so, for now, and until the surge clears, school remains in Limbo.
