And while no one was hurt in that incident, you'll recall that on Wednesday night, a promising 18-year-old graphic designer was stabbed as he walked home from the bus terminal in Belmopan. He had just arrived after a day's work at Brodies in Belize City when he was attacked and robbed, his body left to be found by his brothers.
And though 18-year-old Leroy Cus wasn't a student, the National Student Union of Belize issued a release, highlighting the dangers of the area that Cus was killed in, and emphasizing that many students endure the same horrors.
They provided suggestions to the University of Belize, which they called out for having one of the most dangerous campuses, both in Belmopan and Belize City. The union explained that better security, lighting, and cameras can go a long way to ensure student safety.
And today, the newly instated president, Breanne Reyes, told us more about the experiences that students have had, and what the union will be doing to strengthen their safety.
The Association of UB Student Governments also issued a release, in which they agreed that what happened to Cus fits the profile of many students and added that they are working with the university's administration to organize a series of safety and security assemblies.
