Last night we told you about a teacher turned predator at Canaan SDA High School. He sent a teenage student inappropriate messages via Instagram on Monday January 23rd, telling her he wants to be in a relationship with her. When she showed her parents, they went straight to the school's administration. That was over a week ago, and up to yesterday morning, the school administration hadn't done much about it. You heard the student's father say that the teacher was still on campus, and that the principal wasn't updating him on their internal investigation. And when we called the school yesterday, the principal responded cagily, refraining from giving us any additional details.
Today, we reached out to the Minister of Education Francis Fonseca for comment, and he told us that the teacher was placed on administrative leave yesterday while the ministry investigates. But why was he on campus for a whole week after the teenager's parents went to the principal? That's because the school didn't inform the ministry, and according to Fonseca, they just learnt about the incident yesterday.
Now, Fonseca is waiting on a report from the ministry's investigation, which he expects to receive at the end of this week. In the meantime, MOE sent out a press release, in which they say they are, quote, "Disturbed and deeply concerned about these allegations."
The release reaffirms that the teacher is on administrative leave, and end by saying, quote, "The MoECST reiterates its commitment to ensuring our schools are safe and conducive for learning for all students and teachers." End quote.
