TASA, or Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association has collaborated with the Crocodile Research Coalition to learn best practices on handling a small population of American crocodiles that are thriving within the Atoll.

The participants are engaging in discussions on how to implement income-generating programs to fund the management programs of the reserve, as well as a management plan for this critical species. This initiative also contributes to the Crocodile Research Coalition and the Forest Department's establishment of a first-ever Conservation and Management Plan for the American Crocodile.

TASA says that over 3 decades ago, Belize was identified as a country with a healthy population of the critically endangered American Crocodile. The Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve was considered the source population of the species with the majority being found in select cayes within the range.
