Last night, at around 6:46, the entire country was plunged into darkness with a countrywide blackout. It took more than an hour to restore electricity to every district from this total outage. According to a release from BEL, this was caused by an interruption in supply from Mexico's Comision Federal De Electricidad at the Xul Ha substation.
BEL says it sprang into action and tapped into local and renewable energy sources to restore the national grid, commencing within 20 minutes in Stann Creek and Toledo using BAPCOL. This was followed by hydro from BECOL to commence restoration to Cayo and the remainder of the country by 8:03pm.
