And, coming from the sister CARICOM nation of Jamaica to Belize, where she is non resident ambassador, European Union Ambassador Marianne Van Steen yesterday signed an agreement with BEL to provide solar power to five rural villages that currently don't have electricity.

The project will be funded by a grant of 4.5 million Euros and a BEL contribution of 0.5 million euros, which is equivalent to 11 million Belize dollars. Over the next three years BEL is expected to construct mini-grids in the villages that will provide more than 550 households, businesses, and public services with access to safe, reliable, and sustainable energy services. The electricity will be generated and stored using hybrid solar, diesel and battery technologies. Ambassador, Van Steen spoke more about the project.
