Earlier this week, a concerned resident from the Corozal District shared these images with us.
These pictures and the video show portions of the Philip Goldson Highway where lamp posts holding up BEL's high-tension lines are in one of the road's main lanes. We are told that this stretch of the highway, near Calcutta Village in Corozal, was recently upgraded, and the main lanes widened. The problem is that now the highway has bigger lanes, and the utility poles that used to be on the shoulder of the road are now encroaching on it.
The concerned citizen who pointed this issue out is worried that if these light posts aren't removed soon, they are an accident waiting to happen. So yesterday, we reached out to the public relations team at BEL about these posts that are now on the road.
They told us, quote, "BEL, along with other utilities, is relocating infrastructure as we become aware. [The] utility poles also carry lines from phone and cable companies that need to be removed. BEL is coordinating with all users of these utility poles and anticipates that all such poles will be removed by next week. In the meantime, we are placing caution signs to mitigate public hazards." End quote.
So, if you are on the highway and you are passing these portions of the road, you are advised to drive cautiously until this hazard is addressed next week.
