They've been in operation since 1991 and provide Belize with 40% of its power through renewable energy. Fortis Belize, known for its robust hydroelectric power plants, gave the media a tour today of one of the three hydroelectric facilities in the Cayo district.

The Chalillo dam which was commissioned in 2007, is still humming along 17 years later. Jomarie Lanza took a tour of the facility today, and here's a short preview of that.

Kay Menzies, CEO, Fortis Belize
"I think the main takeaway is a better understanding of how hydro electricity is beneficial for Belize and what it is we are doing to help keep the lights on we don't do it by ourselves this is BELs job but we certainly do what we can to support BEL and the ways that we are doing it and the ways we are innovating as we move ahead and the space to continue to serve the public better and better."

Ted Pate, Operations Manager, Fortis
"And that gives us the capability of producing roughly about 40% of the country's power by a renewable source so that's basically what we at Fortiis Belize are committed to providing for the country."

"While there may be 60% more of power sources being from a renewable source like Hydro is outstanding for not only Belize but also the region itself right so we could pride ourselves in being committed to that source and looking forward to the future increasing that portfolio in adding solar to our portfolio as well adding to that renewable source."

Lizbeth Correa, Operations and Maintenance, Fortis
"Well I feel very privileged because Fortis gave me an opportunity to be working here as the first operator, first female operator yeah."

"I think you have to have passion and be motivated to be working in this field."
