Sargassum, the experts agree that 2026 may turn out to be the roughest year on record. Researchers estimated that over 9.3 million tonnes of sargassum are already en route to the Caribbean and Florida as of March. And, based on projections, the 2026 season is expected to be even worse than the 2025 record, which saw 37.5 million tons of seaweed accumulate across the Atlantic

And it's already arriving in Belize. So if you plan to spend your Easter on the islands, there is a high possibility you will see some sargassum out there. Jomarie Lanza found out more on how serious of an issue it is for tourism:
