And yesterday it was reported that a high speed chase took place at the Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve after security forces attempted to intercept a Guatemalan vessel suspected of illegal fishing. The Rear admiral said that this is not uncommon for that area and that they patrol there for that reason:
Gregory Soberanis, Rear Admiral
"We know that that area is an area that we have, we have fisherfolks from Honduras and Guatemala tend to enter our sea spaces so it's a continuous challenge really it's a continuous threat that we face in the area so it's not a unique situation but this is why the Coast guard is out there, this is why we work with our partners really to ensure that we mitigate the impact and effects of illegal fishing that is being conducted in that area. It is an area where we work very closely with our NGO partners and other government partners. The fisheries department, for example down south with the NGO's we work with SEA, with TIDE, with WCS so all these are our partners who through corporation and collaboration we address the cross border threats of illegal fishing."
