Today we received a very emotional letter from 33 year old Dilma Cano - who shared a traumatizing experience that took place at the Belmopan Hospital. According to Cano, she lost her two and a half pound baby girl after a premature delivery in the 26th week of her pregnancy. In her letter she stated and we quote. "The nurse that was on duty at the time of my labour followed protocol and asked if I wanted my baby. She was kind enough to assure me later on, before she left off duty, that my daughter was clean, bundled up and labeled with my name and sent to the morgue. On Saturday morning after I was discharged, I went to "dress" my daughter, get her ready for a proper burial. Daniella, was her name. When I asked for Daniella, the undertaker said she was NOT in the morgue. My daughter was lost". End of quote. Where was baby Daniella? According to Cano, after many hours of waiting they finally found her in the garbage dump. The baby never made it to the morgue - instead she was in the garbage since Friday morning to Saturday midday. Cano says now she is waiting for the Belmopan Hospital and Ministry of Health to finish their investigation and deal with the incident - that has left a scar in her life forever. In a press release sent out by the Ministry of Health - it stated and we quote, "We confirmed that the body was erroneously misplaced and concluded that the cause was an individual error rather than a systematic error", end of quote. The release also made mention that this is the only incident of this nature that they are aware of at the institution and administrative actions have been taken…. while steps have been (taken) to prevent a reoccurrence.
