And while the KHMH battles over its subvention, its sister hospitals could be turning green with envy. That's because healthcare workers employed anywhere other than the nation's national referral hospital are public officers and are therefore right in the line of fire for that salary cut.
This morning we asked representative Andrew Baird whether or not every hospital worker should be spared the cut. Here's his response.
Cherisse Halsall "Do you believe that other healthcare professionals should be considered to be exempt as well?"
Andrew Baird - Union Representative, KHMH Workers Union "For the type of work that we do, I would always say yes because no matter where you give healthcare in the country of Belize you are underpaid. I don't know if the time will ever come that we will get value for our worth but I sympathize, our union sympathize with our colleagues out there, we believe that if there is other route that can be taken by the government in trying to bridge the gap with the necessary finances that is needed, then the government needs to look at those avenues or is it necessary that the 10% ought to be or have to be, can't it be 5, can't it be 3? I sympathize with my colleagues and our union will participate in the necessary industrial action as guided by our general membership because our bosses is the general membership, so we will be addressing the type of support that we may be able to give after consultation with our general membership I believe sometime in the coming week or so."
