Earlier in the news, we told you that there were 200 new COVID cases. Over the past few weeks, we've been seeing the number of new cases in the double digits, and this new number may be indicative of an Omicron spike. Whether the variant is already here or not, it's inevitable that it will result in another wave of the pandemic. Today Dr Cuellar explained that while our surveillance isn't the best, we'll know when it's here based on the numbers.
Dr. Fernando Cuellar, Internist
"Unfortunately, our surveillance isn't as good as South Africa, for example. I think the clue will come to us when we see the numbers start going up again, which is exactly what happened with Delta. With Delta we saw the numbers climbing and climbing and we were saying this has to be Delta and our confirmation, so to speak, did not come to about 2 months after the initial suspicion started. So more than likely we will have the same scenario where from the numbers we will see the numbers increasing, because it's so more transmissible. One of the things I am concern about is that with this Omicron and its so transmissible the healthcare workers might be more affected and then will be using healthcare workers and then we will not have enough people to attend to the hospitals and tend to the sick, so I am praying that doesn't happen as we are seeing in other parts of the world."
We should note that Mexico is reporting a strong presence of the Omicron virus - more so than even the United States - which recorded a new all time high of positive cases on Tuesday.
