Belize has achieved a major milestone in health - this country has been certified malaria free by the World Health Organization.
It's an internationally recognized standard that only 42 countries worldwide have reached. And to meet the stands, Belize had to maintain zero indigenous cases of malaria for three years continuously.
Today, the Vector Control Chief of Operations spoke to us via Zoom from Belmopan. He says it's been a long time in the making:
Belize's malaria elimination strategy included strengthening surveillance, improving diagnostics, expanding access to effective antimalarial treatment, and promoting the use of insecticide-treated bed nets.
