The government says the damages and accumulated losses associated with Hurricane Dean total US$53 million. Well today, Belize’s number one ally and money buddy, the government of Taiwan contributed to that cause. Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize, Joseph Shih handed over a cheque for US $200,000 to the Prime Minister.
And while government may have hoped for a larger financial support package, this deal is about more than money. The government of Taiwan will also deploy 10 medical professionals, including 6 specialists to provide free medical care in Corozal. And, the Taiwan mission in Central Farm will donate 30,000 pounds of rice, along with rice and vegetable seeds. Also included in that are papaya seedlings to be distributed to small fruit farmers. Taiwan will also provide three containers of clothing to the storm victims.
Belize Medical Associates will also conduct clinics in Shunush and Copper Bank on Sunday. And in other contribution news, the Scotia Bank has also contributed $75,000 specifically for housing assistance. The bank will also donate $25,000 to other relief and recovery efforts.
