A missile attack by Yemen's Houthi rebels damaged a Belize-flagged ship traveling through the strait that connects the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, forcing the crew to abandon the ship.
The Rubymar - as it is named - was targeted on Sunday with two anti-ship ballistic missiles, one of them struck the ship. The Houthis say the vessel later sunk.
International news reports describe it as a British-registered, Lebanese-operated cargo ship had been on its way to Bulgaria after leaving the United Arab Emirates.
The strike is interesting because the Houthi's are making strikes to oppose Israel and have targeted American and British interests. Belize, however, also opposes Israel and in fact tomorrow will make a presentation at the International Court of Justice in the hearings for the Advisory Opinion on Palestine. Assad Shoman will be speaking before the ICJ on Belize's behalf at 8:00 am local time.
