Tonight, the Mexican government says it has restored order in multiple cities after a wave of violence swept across the nation yesterday. It was set off when Mexican security forces killed the powerful leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes or "El Mencho" in a coordinated attack staged in the Jalisco State in Western Mexico.
In response, operatives of his cartel unleashed chaos in cities across Mexico, attacking security forces, blocking highways and torching supermarkets, banks and vehicles. The violence did not reach Chetumal, but there were vehicles burned in Playa Del Carmen, and Cancun. Today, schools and businesses were closed in some of the areas hit hardest, and residents and tourists were ordered to stay indoors.
But, the violence has subsided and Mexican officials said they have arrested 70 people and killed 34 people suspected of being cartel members, while 25 members of the National Guard had been killed. The dead also included a state prosecutor, a security guard and a civilian.
