And while that is on the official level - on the informal level Belize and Mexico are in active, daily trade and relations as close neighbors.
But there are nagging security concerns due to cartel activity on that side.
Earlier this week, when we spoke to Belize's Ambassador to Mexico, we asked about the general security situation in Quintana Roo - especially with Easter coming up and many Belizeans planning to vacation there.
He discussed the current cartel activity that the Mexican Federal Government has been monitoring in Quintana Roo.
Oscar Arnold, Belize Ambassador to Mexico
"The state of Quintana Roo as well as the federal government are very concerned about the situation as well. Whatever happened with the capture of Mencho, his death and everything that happened after is well documented on social media but what has not been on social media is the fight that this administration, this Mexican administration has been doing for the past year and a half. They have targeted very high level and they have targeted almost every known cartel cell or cartel group that is said to operate in Mexico they have taken quite a bit of leaders, quite a few people have been sent to the US as well they were captured and the US wanted them so they were extradited. And so what happens after those types of operations is that there is a level of splintering that takes place; there is not one main person or one main head who is giving out instruction, so a bit of what we are seeing is because of that. There has been activity as well that has looked at individuals and groups in Quintana Roo area and I say Quintana Roo because it is not only Chetumal; it is Tulum, Playa, Cancun and that entire area."
