So is Cuba doomed to face the wrath of the US? What can be done? We asked Shoman.
Assad Shoman, Historian
"This morning. I don't know if you follow the news this morning, there was a huge demonstration in Havana in front of the, U.S. embassy there by thousands of people defying the United States and saying no. You crazy to to be indicting, you know, Raul Castro or whatever it is. So but don't forget also that the United Nations has come out time and time again against what the U.S. is doing in Cuba for 33 years, the last one being last year. Right. All the countries. And since we've become independent, we are one of those countries that vote against that embargo, that blockade of the United States. All the allies of the United States, Israel always votes with the United States, right? Obviously. And now again, a little microstate in the Pacific And so that depends on the US will vote. But everybody else in the world condemns this thing for 33 years. And still the United States is a rogue country I would say. It's illegal. A lot of its actions are illegal. What it's doing the Caribbean killing people, you know, without any justification is is criminal. It is causing a lot of death and destruction all over the world, especially in Africa."
"It's hard to take an action against a country that is so powerful and that is willing to use its power so readily. You know, careless about the the death and destruction it causes. All that one could do is resist as much as one can and try and try to hope that this would pass. Because of course it will. The United States, I would say, is an evil empire whose days are numbered, it's crumbling, it's falling all too slow, unfortunately. But it will not last forever. No empire lasts forever."
Court Of Appeal Upholds $6.3M Award To Jalacte For State-Built Highway
Back in 2021, the village of Jalacte won a major case in the Supreme Court. They were granted just over 6 million dollars in damages after ruling that the Barrow Administration violated the customary land rights of the Jalacte Village by entering into a 47 million dollar contract with CISCO Construction to fully upgrade the road from the dump area to the edge of the village. The government appealed the judgment. But today, the Court of Appeal upheld the decision, and dismissed the appeal. Leslie Mendez and Allister T. Jenkins represented the village while Douglas Mendes and Iliana Swift represented the government.
The judgment means the government is back on the hook for $6.3 million - but the case could still end up at the CCJ.
