Nearly a quarter million people in Cuba were evacuated over the weekend as wicked Wilma lashed the island with rain and winds. Among the thousands of evacuees were nearly 300 Belizean eye patients and students. Tonight the word from the Belize Embassy in Cuba is that nearly 300 Belizeans on the island are safe.

The embassy reports that 117 eye patients were evacuated from the Marina Hemingway Resort as were 146 students. They report that students at the Latin American School of Medicine are already back in classes. Belize's Embassy in Cuba reopens tomorrow and parents wishing to send supplies to their children on the island can do so by contacting Taca Airlines.
