On June 6th, the Belize was one of 12 countries that the U.S. State Department accused of being a major facilitator of human trafficking. To some the charge was vastly overstated, but the threat of sanctions was very real - so the Government of Belize had to step in line, and in time with U.S. dictates. A reinvigorated human trafficking task force was given a 90 day grace period during which it was to prove that it was serious about trying to curb the human trafficking problem in this country.

Now, it seems those efforts described as "focused plans on prevention, prosecution and protection" seem to have worked. Today the U.S. State Department announced that it has lifted the teir three classification that Belize has been under. Of Uncle Sam's dirty dozen, Belize and Laos are the only two that had the classification lifted.

International news reports Quote ambassador john miller who heads the trafficking office in the U.S. as saying that Belize has rescued 62 trafficking victims in recent months as well as carrying out a number of prosecutions of traffickers.
