Tonight we note the passing of two well known Belizeans. The first is Remijio Montejo. The former Minister of government and two term representative for the Collet Division died last night at 10:00 at the KHMH. Montejo had been ailing with a brain tumor for the past month and despite multiple surgeries, it could not be repaired. At the time of his death, he had been in a coma.
Montejo won the Collet Division for the PUP twice, first in 1989, and then in 1998. He was known as a colorful, self styled and often very frank parliamentarian. Today two of his colleagues from both sides of the floor remembered the man popularly known as 'Nacho.'
Hon. Jose Coye,
"It didn't come as a surprise to us except we had hoped that he would have had been able to live a bit longer. We knew that he was suffering from a terminal illness but we had hoped from the prognosis that he would have been with us for a few more months but my condolence to Mr. Montejo's family. He was indeed a good public officer, he was an area representative, he was a minister, he was a good man and I beg God's blessings on him."
Hon. Dean Barrow,
"Remijio was one of the good guys. There was not a mean bone in his body. Eventhough we were political opponents there was never anything personal about Remijio. He was always pleasant, he was always amiable, he was always genial. So I think that we can say in all truthfulness for the record we can repeat that he was one of the good guys."
Funeral services for Remijio Montejo will be held on Saturday afternoon at St. Ignatius Church.
