The Belize City Council owes Sanitation Enterprise Limited owner Rupert Marin one point seven million dollars and earlier this week Marin went to collect. He didn’t do it personally but on Tuesday, marshalls from the Supreme Court showed up to the City Council with a request for the issue of a writ of execution. In small change, they went to crowfoot the City Council’s property. An inventory was made but nothing was taken. The City Council has until July 10th or else assets will be seized. A release from the City Council late this evening confirmed the developments and says that it is working with central government to find a solution. Part of that solution will be cutting $30,000 from the $1.7 million. That is $30,000 owed in trade license fees.
As we previously reported, in May SEL went to the Supreme Court asking it to garnish the City Council’s subvention from government. Justice Minette Hafiz denied the request but she gave the City Council six weeks to come up with a payment plan. The six weeks doesn’t expire until July 10th.
And while the City Council might owe Marin $1.7 million, information circulated by the City Council shows that SEL has $5.7 million in sales tax arrears and another half a million dollars in general sales tax arrears. SEL as you may know no longer exists.
