And another project that the AG had embarked on was revitalising Vital Statistics. For years, Belizeans have been plagued by long lines, unprofessional attitudes, and painstakingly slow processes. And the AG is trying to fix this issue at one of the country's most important government establishments.
But there have been some delays. Here's what she told us today:
Magali Marin-Young, Attorney General
"Firstly, we would have been able to move to the Charles Bartlett Hyde Building by the end of the last5 year but because the Belize Tax Service, because the Vital Stats is to be relocated to where the Belize Tax Service currently operates at the Charles Bartlett Hyde Building, but they were waiting on furniture for the Eleanor Hall Building where they will relocate. I was told end of the year was not possible, I was given a new date in March and now I am being told end of May/June for the relocation. Hopefully, when we relocate we can expand the amount of clerks we have to expedite the service but because of the location, there is no room for us to put any physical body, additional clerks in that place, I don't know if you've visited that place and seen how cramped it is. It's a matter of space and as soon as we move to the Charles Bartlett we'll be able to expand the clerks and aim to provide speedier service to members of the public."
On Monday we'll hear the frustration of one man who's been trying for days just to get his proper birth name printed on his birth certificate.
