After years of potholes and muddy roads, the residents of York Street finally have a fully cemented street. It was a collaboration between the area rep, Henry Charles Usher, and the Belize City Council. Today both of them told us why that street was their priority, and the mayor added that they're trying to get 60 more streets done before the end of the year.
Henry Charles Usher, Area Rep, Fort George

"This Street is one of the oldest arches in this era. It's a street that runs parallel to Freetowm Road. It used to be an alternative to having to go on Freetowm Road. But for a long time it was not paved during times of flooding or storms or hurricanes. Residents could not even access their homes sometimes. So it's a pledge that we made very early on. And I'm just happy that we could have partnered with the Belize City Council to get it done."
Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City

"It's about improving the quality of life for the residents in the area. Right. This street prior to the concreting of it. When it rains, people used to trudge through it up to their knees in water. And I think by working along with the Area Rep to get this street done was one of our high priority areas."

"You're also thinking of doing Pickstock Street or the area representative is doing Pickstock Street next talk to us about that."
Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City
"Yeah. Again, that street is right. It serves as a connection point. When you come in off North Front Street to get on to New Road. Right. And what what has been happening there. If you are to drive, you know, when you come off from North Front Street going towards Pickstock like a drop. Right. And so we wanted to ensure that we fix up that street. That is a street where the father of the nation last residence were. So we felt that it was imperative that we get that street concreted and up to par with some of the other streets in the city."
Reporter:
"Henry mentioned that the goal is to pave 90 streets, I believe, by the end of the year. How far are we from completing that goal?"
Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City
"We are we are one third of the way. Last check we were we have completed 30 streets so far. And so we figure that notwithstanding, the rain falls and occasionally hiccups and we should be able to get those streets completed for the residents of the city. Every day you all drive right and you cry on physical infrastructure. We get in the the streets are in potholes, the city of over 700 plus streets."
"We will never be able to completely pave all the streets. But, I feel as if we will set a plan and you are able to say 90 streets per year. We should be able to achieve great things in terms of physical infrastructure."
