This morning, a list of traffic violations began circulating on Facebook. Each violation had a fine next to it. Excessive passengers on public service vehicles, for example, had a fine of $100, and driving under the influence is $500. According to the traffic department, there will be stricter enforcement of these violations. The Minister told us more about their decision.
Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Youth, Sports & Transport
"We are the Ministry of Transportation and the whole nation expects us to act based on circumstances. If you notice, three weeks ago, seven people died from motorcycle accidents and they leave loved ones behind and it hurts so the nation is now looking at us to figure out how we can find a solution to mitigate the amount of accidents. We can only go and make advertisements, we can only target, it's up to the operator of a vehicle. For example in Belize City, when you are driving your vehicle, a motorcycle pass on either side so they put that driver at risk. Even now we are talking about the seatbelt practices, we're saying now that it is enforced that every person in a motor vehicle must wear a seatbelt, and we're saying you must get the gadget to answer your phone so you don't get distracted, because right now the cause of motor vehicle accidents is distraction with a cellphone and maybe sometimes bad tires and some carelessness so we hope that we can mitigate some accidents in the country."
