The US Department of State's Trafficking in Persons Report for 2024 was released this week. It states that Belize has maintained its Tier 2 status. In the language of the report, that means that while the Government of Belize "does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking," it is "making significant efforts to do so."

According to a release from the government, the report also acknowledges that two traffickers were convicted, as well as the increase in the identification of victims and the increase in trafficking investigations.

Today the media asked the ComPol to comment on the report.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I think to be at tier two is still good, we remain where we were last year and again, the police have been doing a number of things, working with our social partners, we do have the human development that is a part of the ATIPS council and community rehab and so with what we have done, they are making some recommendations and I'm sure that Cabinet is going to be looking at those recommendations and see how we can implement some of them to see how we can remain or at least drop to a lower tier where that is concerned."
