After months of negotiation, yesterday the Millennium Challenge Corporation Board of Directors approved a five-year US$125 million grant investment in energy and education in Belize.

It's a big "get" for the Briceno administration and today in Orange Walk, the Prime Minister told CTV-3 about the progress of the MCC investments:

John Briceno, Prime Minister
"Well we have not signed yet. What will happen is that it has been approved. I think that in early September we are going to have the signing ceremony. I think 125 Million US Dollars which is 250 Million and it's significant because 80% of that is going to be invested in education and some of the things that they've been looking at is to see how we can connect education directly with the needs of the country as we are growing. So it's not just about churning out students from the school but to ensure that they can participate in the economy of the future so we are looking at that looking at teacher training so it's a very exciting time for Belize and it's the same thing with energy they want to participate in government to look at how we can implement new and innovative laws and help us in acquiring the battery bank that we want to be able to get to store a lot of energy when there is no sun so it's a lot of things that are going on and I'm very grateful to the millennium challenge corporation and their board Ms Albright who is the chair person and then also of course to the United States government and the congress for approving this to the US Embassy here."
