Speaking at the Belize Diaspora Summitt over the weekend, UDP Leader Shyne Barrow said if elected he would support allowing Belizean Americans to vote in the United States. That means opening up voting stations there. He explained theologic to us:
Jules Vasquez:
"So you would support people resident in another country because the laws that currently exist are that although you just come home and vote you shouldn't. You should stay here. You should be here for, I think, four weeks."
Shyne Barrow, Leader of the Opposition
"No, no, no. In order to register in a constituency."
"That's right."
"But very important. Yes. Yes. Like Vazquez and Vazquez. Very important."
Jules Vasquez:
"But my question is, you don't have a problem with the principle of being able to vote in a constituency in which you do not live in which you do not live. The reality."
Shyne Barrow, Leader of the Opposition
"You see. You look at the two examples, Bukele and the United States, when they say they treasure their diaspora, they live it through policy, through legislation. When we say we appreciate the remittance, we appreciate all they give back from our diaspora, which, you know, really helps our economy. Belizean Americans in particular, I can only speak of them, but I'm sure Belizeans everywhere."
"Whether they are in another CARICOM nation or they ended up in Britain or they're in Africa or Europe wherever. Belizeans have that unbreakable bond. Belizeans living abroad with hope. And we see through the remittance, we see it in many other forms and fashions. And so if you have roots in a constituency, it doesn't matter that you know, you live in California or living in New York."
