Guyanese jurist Arif Bulkan has been a judge of Belize's Court of Appeal since 2022, and now he's moving on up to the big time.
It was announced today that Justice Bulkan has been selected by the Regional Judicial and Legal Services Commission to join the Caribbean Court of Justice as a Judge. He will fill the vacancy created by the elevation of Justice Winston Anderson to the presidency of the Court in July.
Bulkan has worked both regionally and internationally and career has functioned in various capacities, including as litigator, academic, author, activist, judge, and international law expert. Justice Bulkan has published widely on indigenous rights, human rights, and constitutional law.
Notably, reports say that local Senior Counsel Melissa Balderamos Mahler as a new temporary judge of the Court of Appeal on a temporary contract.
