Rain has been falling heavily all across Belize since early this morning, the product of an upper level trough. And this morning between 6:30 and 9:30, that meant two inches of rain falling in just a few hours.
And that opened up what's being called the "Raccoon St Waterfall". We're talking about the biggest police station in the country where, when it rains, it pours. That's because of a decades old leaking roof. As the video shows, the rain came streaming down through the stairwell of the three story building.
Now, this is a recurrent problem and at the end of July, Minister of Home Affairs, Kareem Musa promised a fix would be in place within two months - meaning by the end of September. Well, nothing has happened with that and today the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a statement saying that though estimates have been made and funds have been approved, the tendering process isn't complete. And at the end of September, the Ministry expects approval from the Contractor General in order for construction on the roof to begin. So, in small change that means, the two month deadline for repairs will not be made. The Minister has proposed putting a traditional gable or triangular roof above the hopeless porous flat cement roof that is there.
