The proposal has been on the table since November, but gob is finally getting appears ready to relinquish management of the Hattieville prison. Chief of Staff in the Prime Minister's Office Francis Fonseca has confirmed that the bill to privatise the prison will be tabled at the next house sitting later this month. The management of the institution would be taken over by a group of Rotarians called the "Kolbe Foundation" - a not for profit organization. John Woods, a leading member of the Kolbe group told seven news that they can manage the prison for less than the 5 million dollars government is paying annually. While efficiency is a concern, for most of the 180 persons working at the prison, job security is the biggest issue. Our newsroom has received calls this week stating that as many as 80 persons will lose their job. Woods would only say that the matter of staffing would come under review by the new management team. But like everyone else we spoke to, Woods did not have a date for the management handover. Chief of staff Fonseca stressed that it would have to come after the House Meeting tentatively set for later this month.
