When the sanitation services of the City Council was privatized, it didn't cause much commotion in a community that's come to accept privatization as completely inevitable even if it is largely undesirable. But the Christian Workers' Union which represents the sanitation workers, today spoke out against the privatization. The union says it denounces the council's blatant disregard for the workers' rights to choose their employment. The union is calling for a meeting with the city hall bosses to dialogue on the issue. A request for that meeting was sent 13 days ago but the mayor's office has not responded. Under the plan, the council's drain sweepers, garbage collectors and street sweepers, which number in the hundreds will have their employment transferred to SEL and another new sanitation company.
