Greg Choq, the leader of the Ketchi Council of Belize and the driving force behind the Mayan Leaders Alliance this evening sent off a letter to Belmopan Mayor Anthony Chanona.
The letter says, "Your statements are not only explicitly racially discriminatory in nature, but is characteristic of a weak political leader whose attitudes and beliefs have long come of age." It goes on, "this primeval attitude reflects a profound error of perception about the real problem which our leaders appear to lack the ability to address." Choq's letter goes on to speak of institutionalized discrimination exploitation and injustice against the Maya of Belize which leads Choq to the conclusion that, "our people are systematically being pushed towards landlessness."_Choq warns the mayor that his action will further perpetuate wrongdoings against of those who have no regards for the fundamental right of the Maya people. He closes his letter by demanding an apology from the Mayor for referring to the Maya people as "Indians."Because it came just before news time, we were unable to get a response from the Belmopan City Council.
