It's a story that has emerged as a kind of national outrage, as this morning's talk shows were flooded with calls about Belmopan Mayor Tony Chanona's intent to sweep out Mayan squatters from the outskirts of his city. But the callers to the talk shows aren't the only ones who've been talking, last night residents of the Maya Mopan and Salvapan area met to discuss the plan to relocate them. At the center of the discussion was the mayor's letter to the Prime Minister which was read both in Mopan and Ketchi by facilitator Valentino Shal. Reports from the meeting are that they took a stand saying, that they will not be moved from the area. They have decided to invite Mayor Chanona to a meeting that will take place on Sunday. It’s noteworthy that they invited the Area Representative, and the mayor to last night's meeting, but only a representative of the representative showed and the Mayor did not attend.
