The entire national uproar over social security began with the single revelation on 7 news that social security money had been used to cover 6 million dollars in defaulted loan payments by Glenn Godfrey. That first discovery led to the revelation of tens of millions more of your money that had been guaranteed, securitized or otherwise fronted for private interests. Well tonight the story about Social Security isn't quite that big, but it is similar in that it gives a telling portrait how loosely government regards social security money. And if government, which should guard this money so zealously, feels that way about Social Security, well you can't expect private individuals like Glenn Godfrey to feel much differently. It's an illustration in abuse, and just not giving a damn about the workers money:
Said Musa - Prime Minister
"The primary objectives for this are to ensure the safety of the funds of the SSB."
Well if the prime minister truly wants to protect social security's money, charity begins at home. and according to these Social Security financials, government owes social security 3.7 million dollars - and has owed that money since the year two thousand. But because government can have its way with social security money, the 3.7 million dollars was never listed as a loan and is interest free for the gob. So if PM Musa is so determined to protect social security money, when will this outstanding amount be paid back. Well don't ask the prime minister and minister of finance - unless you want this answer:
Jules Vasquez - Editor 7 news
"Mr. prime minister in the audited financials of social security board, 3 point 775 million owing by the government of belize has been carried forward interest free from the year 2000. Interest free, every year it's there, government of Belize accounts receivable, it is not listed as a loan but it's a loan its just because nobody cares. However it is interest free one gets the impression that the government is setting the example by saying 3 point 775 million of social security money who cares? We passed up 3 point 34 in a civil judgement.
Said Musa
"your question, what's your question?
Jules vasquez
"I am saying that will the government pay back this money mr. prime minister?
Said Musa
"yes."
Jules Vasquez
"When will it pay it back?
Said Musa
"I can't tell you that right now. but we will pay it back."
But in the meantime we wouldn't advise you to hold your breath.
We'll keep an eye on that receivable when social security's new financials are posted in october.
