He emerged as a national figure in January with his outspoken tirades against the government, but while he's a fearless firebrand, Dylan Reneau is really a public servant, working for the Government of Belize and serving at its pleasure. And that pleasure - or maybe displeasure - sent him to a public servant's Siberia in May.
He was ordered to report to the treasury department in Punta Gorda on May 13th but Reneau only went there for three days. He's been fighting to keep his secondment to the union headquarters in Belmopan. The Supreme Court gave him leave for judicial review on June 2nd. and now the government has decided it's not worth the fight in court. Reneau told us today that he's been cleared to remain at union headq2uarters for two more years.
Dylan Reneau, PSU President
"I just got a call from my lawyer and the lawyer is telling me that the government is willing to settle, to give me a 2 year extension on my secondment."
Jules Vasquez,
Is the fact that the government agreed to do it without even going into court, is it an indication that the transfer in the first place was an essentially malicious act?
Dylan Reneau,
"Jules from my perspective yes it was definitely and its something that the government has realized that it's a case that they were going to lose and they've decided to settle outside of court."
