They began arriving over the weekend and tonight the biggest gathering of regional heads of states ever assembled are in Belize. The Governor Generals and Presidents of ten Caribbean countries are here for a three-day CARICOM Heads of State Conference. The conference is being hosted by our Governor General Sir Colville Young. The focus however will be on: "sustainable development, protecting our region's biodiversity."
We spoke to St. Kitts and Nevis' Governor General Sir Cuthbert Sebastian about the conference but first Amelia Poornananda from the GG"s Office in Belize gave us an overview of the historic gathering.
Amelia Poornananda, Governor General's Office
"They get together, discuss issues that affect the Caribbean countries, and as you know sustainable development is something we need to look into. So they discuss different issues and come up with decisions and hopefully they'll be implemented by each government."
Sir Cuthbert Sebastian, Governor General - St. Kitts
"Its an excellent thing that the Governor Generals and Presidents of CARICOM countries should get together, even to know each other."
Keith Swift,
What can we expect to be accomplished during this conference?
Sir Cuthbert Sebastian,
"Well we get in people to lecture us on certain things. As you will recall we have a lot on sustainable development being spoken of during this session."
The week will be rounded out on Thursday with visits to Altun Ha, Maruba Resort and Jungle Spa, and a state dinner at the Biltmore Plaza. The heads of states depart on Friday.
