Reports to 7news say that the Judicial and Legal Services Commission has approved the appointment of two new Supreme Court judges. They are Minette Hafiz and Herbert Lord.

Those appointments must now go before the Senate for ratification. The Senate meets in a special session for that purpose on Tuesday.

Hafiz currently works out of the Solicitor General's office and would be expected to deal with the backlog of civil cases.
Lord has been Chief Magistrate since 1996 and has been a magistrate for 30 years
.
But - as we understand it - Lord's ascension was opposed by the bar association in its representations to the judicial and legal service commission. Reportedly, bar representatives requested that their opposition be entered into the minutes of the meeting.

And while the record stands, at this time, it's not consequential to Lord's ascension which it is expected will get Senate confirmation next week.
