He's a member of parliament who was dragged across the University of Belize compound by the police riot squad in April of 2005, and now, Patrick Faber is suing the government. Yesterday Chief Justice Abdulai Conteh began hearing the civil case in which Faber is claiming that government, specifically the Police Department, violated his constitutional rights.
Faber was represented by Aldo Salazar of Young's Law Firm while the Attorney General was represented by two crown counsels, Priscilla Banner and Andrea McSweaney. In the first day of testimony, Deputy Commissioner of Police Maureen Leslie testified that she was in charge of security for the Prime Minister who was the guest speaker at a student's forum. The case was adjourned until February first, 2005 because two key witnesses, including Assistant Commissioner of Police Edwardo Wade are presently out of the country.
By that time, Faber may need a new attorney because reports tell 7NEWS that Aldo Salazar will be acting as the new registrar of the Supreme Court. Salazar has accepted an offer to take the place of Minnette Hafiz who has been promoted to the Supreme Court bench.
