Government has gone to The House for approval of its proposed sale of 3 thousand acres of northern Ambergris
Caye. And while it got the approval of the National Assembly, it did not get the “ok” from San Pedro Residents.

And now those residents – or a good number of them – have resolved to do all they can to block the sale.

A petition backed by the San Pedro Business Association, The San Pedro Town Board, The San Pedro Tour Guides Association, and Area Representative Manuel Heredia flatly opposes the sale of the land to Caribbean Developers Limited – a South Korean group. They say that the land is to be used for the development of the island.

At a town meeting last night, that sentiment was repeated many times. A decision was also taken that businesses will shut down for two hours next Tuesday morning as a form of protest. During that time, towns-people will stage a street protest – dressed all in white – to make the point that it is non-political.

But, in the end, everything is political – and the semi-shutdown is timed to precede Wednesday’s house meeting in Belmopan.
