Last night you heard Foreign Affairs Minister and Attorney General Wilfred Elrington on this newscast saying that the US$10 million in unaccounted for Venezuelan money must be some kind of mix-up because he doesn’t see how any official of the last government could have been so bold as to fleece it. Well, the Association of Concerned Belizeans today issued a release taking Elrington to task for those remarks, while also chiding the government for dragging its feet on what it characterizes as an urgent public matter.
The ACB release laments that it took 14 days after the letter was received for the Financial Secretary to write to the Venezuelan authorities. And then, going on to last night’s interview, the ACB concludes that the Attorney General, “appears…not to be taking the situation is seriously as we would have expected.” And how seriously does the ACB want it taken? Well they are asking that, “emissaries be dispatched to Venezuela post-haste to review the agreements and to get a first-hand understanding of the situation.”
And while the ACB has, let’s say, a generous ear with the Barrow administration, seems that’s not going to happen. By all indications what’s going to happen is what is happening: a courteous letter querying the status of the full $20 million, and a patient wait for a reply.
