And while there may be a new way of clearing out bad cops, there will be no new mayor in Orange Walk. Former Mayor Kevin Bernard, has moved on up

He's now a cabinet minister and the Area Representative for Orange Walk East. But, before last Wednesday's election, he was serving out the end of his 3rd term in office as Mayor of the Orange Walk Town Council.

He told us that now that he has to vacate that post, his second-in-command at the council, Deputy Mayor Ian Cal, is holding over until the upcoming Municipal Elections:

Hon. Kevin Bernard - Minister of Youths, Sports & E-Governance
"The Town Council Act provides, because of the nature of the timing of my leaving the post, the deputy mayor holds over until the end of this term. And so, the deputy mayor, Ian Cal, is the acting mayor for the remainder of this term. And of course, as a political party, we will decide who are our candidates, who will go forward to the next election. That is yet to be determined. But, in the meantime, Ian Cal will serve as the acting mayor, and that is already taking place. The Ministry of Local Government had already sent out the release, and that transition is already in place. In fact, as you know, Ian had served as my deputy for 4 years now. So, it was no difficult time to pass on the baton to him in the interim. I'm not saying that he will seek re-election. That is a decision for him, and those who want to run for the next election. I am confident as well that during the remainder of this term, he will do what is right and what is best to ensure that the smooth management of the Orange Walk Town Council."

Municipal Elections are due sometime in March of next year.
