The re-districting process - it's an absolute necessity for Belize's lopsided political divisions. As we've been reporting, there is widespread disproportionality between mega divisions such as Stann Creek West and micro divisions such as Fort George and Mesopotamia.

It contravenes the constitution and it's a matter that both political parties have agreed needs urgent attention. There was no time to do it before the last election, but, with three years to go before another election, now is certainly the time to do it. Except the PUP - which supported re-districting when it was in opposition - seems to be in no rush to start the process.

When we asked the Prime Minister about it yesterday in Belmopan, he said sometime soon, maybe:...

Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize
"Minister of the Public Service and Election and Boundaries Commission Minister Henry Charles Usher has informed us that they have started the discussion. How far they are in the discussions, I don't know, but maybe in the weeks to come I'll be able to give you a more in-depth information as to where we are, but it is and continues to be a priority and it will be done under this present PUP government."
